CUPE 229-1 Bargaining Update #3

A Message from your Bargaining Committee:

Bargaining is Going…

After waiting 7 months for the employer to respond to us and our April Notice to Bargain we have finally begun to meet and exchange proposals across the table.

We have been in talks with Aramark over four different days this month and have engaged in lots of back-and-forth discussion through our respective representatives. Going forward, we have offered multiple dates for which we can continue to bargain. Sadly however, The Employer has only committed to only 4 days over the next 3 months. We remain hopeful and stay committed to good faith bargaining with the employer. But we want to begin to get to the real and important issues. Why make us wait?

We have agreed to several small proposals between us, including expanding the list of health care practitioners who can provide a doctor’s note and doubling the number of days for jury duty leave. Many of our proposals are identical to ones being made by 229-3 (The Donald Gordon Conference Centre). We have asked the employer to consider bargaining with both units at a common table on these proposals however this has not been agreed to.

Many of our proposals are monetary, but so far The Employer still has not discussed any monetary proposals with us.. We hope they will begin to have these important discussions soon, and not keep us waiting.

The Recent Survey

  1. We have the preliminary results from our recent staffing survey but we are hoping more responses will still come in.
  2. 66% of Part Time respondents indicated that they wanted more hour
  3. 37% of Part Time respondents indicated that they have been scheduled outside of their availability.
  4. 56% of Part Time respondents indicated that they would be willing to work at other locations to get more hours.
  5. 41% of respondents indicated that they were not informed of seasonal layoffs when they were hired.
  6. 56% of respondents believe that there are not enough staff being scheduled.

We feel this strongly showcases how many part-time employees are NOT being given the hours they need. And that Aramark has an available work force right here with us that is not being utilized. 66% of Part Timers who responded are asking for more hours, but we heard that 56% of responders to this survey have felt the burden of being short or under staffed in some way on the job. And many of you wrote in detail of the extra stress you feel at work.

If you have not filled out the survey, please do so here, now!

We will be presenting this survey to the employer, let them hear what you have to say!

And spread the word to take the survey, and encourage all our part time and full time coworkers to use their voice and show Aramark what things are really like in our work environment.
