Dear Members,
We hope this message finds you well. We want to provide an update on the ongoing negotiations with the University and share the next steps in our collective efforts to secure fair treatment for all members.
As many of you are aware, negotiations have been particularly challenging. Despite our best efforts to advocate for improvements to wages, address the critical issue of short staffing, and stop the contracting out of unionized jobs, the employer has come up short in their position. These issues are at the core of what affects our working conditions, and we are committed to ensuring they are addressed adequately.
On wages, the employer has agreed to some market adjustments for trades, however so far, these fall short of what we’re asking and what we deserve. They have refused to address the discrepancy between the wages of Caretakers and Custodians. In addition, the employer has not moved to address lost wages as a result of Bill 124. Other hurdles also include lack of progress on contracting out language as well as addressing the short staffing crisis.
Given the lack of meaningful progress, the union has made the difficult but necessary decision to file a “No Board” report with the Ministry of Labour tomorrow. Filing this report is a significant step that sets the clock for a possible legal strike or lockout on Monday, February 3rd. It is not a step we take lightly, but it underscores the seriousness of the situation and our commitment to standing strong for your rights.
We understand that this news may raise questions or concerns. Please know that your union is here to support you and keep you informed every step of the way.
Your solidarity and participation are more important than ever as we navigate this critical juncture. Together, we can demonstrate our collective resolve and demand the respect and fairness we deserve.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement. Stay tuned for further updates.
In solidarity,
Steve Senechal, Cory Burns, Amelia Lanarjeira, Dave Knapton |
