Dear Members,
I hope this message finds you well.
I would like to update you on the recent developments concerning our negotiations with Aramark. On January 8th, your Union’s Bargaining Committee met with Aramark, supported by a Conciliator from the Ministry of Labour.
Last week, we reached out to gather your experiences and challenges during this financially demanding time. We appreciate those who shared their stories with us, highlighting the difficulties faced while living on our current wages. We presented some of these accounts anonymously to illustrate the impact of rising costs on our lives.
Additionally, we shared the findings of our staffing survey anonymously, along with narratives from members regarding the limited hours they have been receiving this past year. These issues have not only increased stress levels but have also affected the quality of services we strive to provide to the students of Queen’s University.
In our discussions, we decided to withdraw certain proposals that were causing delays in negotiations to concentrate on critical matters, including the necessity of a wage increase. We encouraged our employer to consider a similar approach.
It is worth noting that the employer claimed we are the highest-paid workers in Ontario for contracted-out food service. We did not agree with this assertion, as it does not accurately reflect our current situation or the hardships many of us are facing.
Given the lack of meaningful progress, the union has made the difficult but necessary decision to file a “No Board” report with the Ministry of Labour today. Filing this report is a significant step that sets the clock for a possible legal strike or lockout on Monday, February 3rd. It is not a step we take lightly, but it underscores the seriousness of the situation and our commitment to standing strong for your rights.
We understand that this news may raise questions or concerns. Please know that your union is here to support you and keep you informed every step of the way.
As we move forward, it is crucial to be aware that Management may attempt to convince you that a strike is not the answer. They might issue threats or make statements designed to sow doubt about our strength and unity. It is vital that we do not lose focus. Let us remember that the years of being undervalued and underappreciated have led us to this moment. It is their actions that have contributed to our current situation, and we will remain united and strong until they recognize our true value.
Do not be afraid, for we are strong when we stand together. This collective power is our greatest asset, and with it, we can effect the change we seek. Courage, unity, and determination will guide us as we navigate these challenges.
Thank you for your continued support.
Best regards,
Your Bargaining Team
