USW Strike Mandate Vote

STRIKE MANDATE VOTE: FEBRUARY 11 – 14, 2025

This week, February 11–14, we need you to send a clear message: We are united, and we are ready to fight for a fair contract. A strong strike mandate vote will show Queen’s that we won’t back down. Click here for more information.

Queen’s has completed bargaining with all five (5) CUPE Locals, and most of our colleagues in those Locals have successfully ratified their contracts. CUPE passed record-high strike mandate votes, which sent a clear message to Queen’s. Steelworkers, now it’s our time. We’re calling on you to give us the same mandate – a strong strike mandate vote.

Let’s be clear: A strike mandate does not mean an immediate strike. What it does mean is that we, as a collective, are willing to take action if Queen’s refuses to bargain in good faith. A strong YES vote puts the pressure on them to move—without it, they will have no reason to offer us a better deal.

This is our moment to stand together. Vote YES and show Queen’s that we will not be ignored.

In Solidarity,
USW 2010 Support Staff Bargaining Team

Strike Questions

What Is a Strike Mandate Vote?
A strike vote can be called at any point during bargaining but usually happens when the union needs support from its members to push negotiations forward. A strong “YES” vote gives the Union Bargaining Committee and Executive Board the authority to call a strike if needed and strengthens the negotiating committee’s position at the table. If the employer doesn’t meet the union’s terms, job action, including a strike, may follow.

If the majority of members vote “YES” to the strike vote, do we automatically go on strike?
Historically, the stronger the “YES” vote, the less likely it is that a strike is necessary because it sends a message to the other side that we are united in our resolve to obtain the best possible contract.

Am I eligible to vote if I’ve only recently become a Steelworker?
There is no waiting period to join USW 2010. The vote is for the entire support staff membership, including new hires.

Will Queen’s know how I voted in the strike vote?
No, Queen’s will not know how you voted in the strike vote. The vote is conducted with a blind ballot, meaning your name is never provided to the university. Your vote remains confidential and private.

How can I help make this vote successful?

  1. Vote YES: the most important thing you can do is vote YES when the time comes.
  2. Talk to Your Co-Workers: Many people have questions or concerns about a strike mandate vote. Have conservations with your colleagues, answer their questions, and encourage them to vote. If you’re unsure about something, direct them to the union’s website or enter their question for them in the strike questions survey below.
  3. Attend and Promote Q&A Sessions: Make sure you and your co-workers attend the union’s Q&A sessions. These meetings are an opportunity to seek clarity and support for the mandate.
  4. Challenge Fear and Misinformation: Queen’s may try to intimidate workers or spread misinformation about the vote. Remind your colleagues that a strike mandate does not mean an automatic strike – it strengthens our bargaining power and can lead to a better deal.
  5. Lead By Example: Be vocal, be informed, and be ready to stand up for a fair contract.
  6. Download this Poster: Share it with your coworkers digitally and post it around your office building.
