Queen’s Deficit

On May 18, 2023, Queen’s University announced a $62.8 million dollar operating budget deficit, and the accompanying hiring freeze for full time positions funded by the operating budget (Queen’s projects 2023-24 deficit | Queen’s Gazette). This announcement was very troubling news to receive, especially on the heels of the repeal of Bill 124 and the potential for discussions on wage increases.

Through Unity Council (CUPE, ONA, OPSEU, PSAC, QUFA, USW) we requested a meeting with Teri Shearer, Interim Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), and Donna Janiec, VP (Finance and Administration). We have questions that need to be answered, including about the structure of the budget crisis and how after 7 years of surplus, including the years preceding the 2019 tuition freeze, we now find ourselves in a position of deficit. We met with Ms. Shearer and Ms. Janiec on May 31, 2023.
